Heroes are the 44 playable characters of Deadlock , fighting as a team on the streets of the Cursed Apple to summon the Patrons . Heroes wield various supernatural skills along with weapons, and become more powerful by equipping Items and collecting Souls . Besides their weapons, heroes also possess at least 4 unique abilities with a variety of effects. Some abilities are completely passive, and will always be active regardless (such as Abrams ' Infernal Resilience ), though many are activated with their respective bindings ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 by default). Abilities come with up to 3 upgrades, which can be purchased with an increasing number of Ability Points . Although abilities tend to scale with Spirit Power , they often scale with other stats as well. Some heroes also have innates that grant them bonus stats or additional, non-upgradeable abilities. Unlike other Units , Heroes have set base stats that they can improve through leveling up or purchasing items . They also have additional Power Increases , gained at specific levels which grant bonuses to specific stats.
