9 Ways to Adjust Screen Brightness in Windows 10 and 11

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Windows offers more than one way to change how bright your display looks, but the right method depends on the hardware. A laptop’s built-in panel can usually be controlled from Windows, while a desktop monitor often requires its own buttons or on-screen menu. HDR, battery-saving features, ambient-light sensors, and content-adaptive controls add a few more options—and a few common points of confusion.
Here are nine reliable ways to adjust brightness on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, along with what to try when the brightness control is missing.
1. Use the Quick Settings or Action Center brightness slider
The fastest software method is the brightness slider in Windows’ quick-access panel.
Select the Network, sound, or battery area on the right side of the taskbar. On many PCs, this appears as the Network icon or a group of status icons.
Find the Brightness slider in Quick Settings.
Drag the slider left to dim the screen or right to brighten it.
You can also press Windows key + A to open Quick Settings. Microsoft does not document a separate, universal keyboard shortcut that directly increases or decreases brightness.
Windows 10 uses the Action Center interface. Select the notification icon at the right end of the taskbar, then use the brightness control if your PC exposes one. Some Windows 10 versions show preset brightness levels instead of a continuous slider.
If the control is absent, the display may be an external monitor, or the display driver may not be working correctly.
2. Change brightness in Settings
Settings is the most consistent Windows method for a supported built-in laptop or tablet display.
Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
In Windows 11, select System > Display .
In Windows 10, open System > Display .
Under Brightness , drag the slider to the preferred level.
This setting controls the selected built-in display. If multiple screens are connected, select the display you want to configure first. On a desktop using a conventional external monitor, Windows may not show this slider at all; use the monitor’s controls instead.

3. Press your laptop’s brightness keys
Most laptops have keys marked with a sun icon. They may be on the function row, arrow keys, or another part of the keyboard. Depending on the model, you might press the brightness key by itself or hold Fn while pressing it.
There is no universal Windows brightness-key combination. For example, an Fn shortcut that works on one manufacturer’s laptop may do nothing on another. The exact behavior is determined by the laptop’s firmware, keyboard layout, and hot-key software.
Look for two sun symbols—usually one for dimming and one for brightening. If the keys work only when Fn Lock is enabled or disabled, try pressing the keyboard’s Fn Lock key, often labeled Fn with a padlock symbol.
If the Settings slider works but the keyboard keys do not, update the laptop manufacturer’s hot-key or system-control software and check for a BIOS or firmware update. That problem is generally in the manufacturer’s hot-key layer rather than in the Windows brightness setting itself.
4. Use the external monitor’s buttons or on-screen display
Windows often cannot adjust the hardware brightness of an external display. This is normal for many desktop monitors and for monitors connected through HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, a docking station, or an adapter.
Press the monitor’s Menu , Settings , or joystick button.
Open the Picture , Display , or similar section.
Choose Brightness and adjust it using the monitor controls.
Exit the on-screen display to save the setting.
Menu names vary by manufacturer. Do not confuse Brightness with Contrast : brightness changes the display’s light level, while contrast changes the separation between light and dark tones.
If you are using a laptop with an external monitor, the built-in panel may still have a Windows brightness slider even though the external screen does not.
5. Turn on automatic brightness for changing room light
Some laptops and tablets include an ambient-light sensor. Windows can use it to adjust the built-in display as the surrounding light changes.

Open Settings > System > Display .
Select Brightness if that option appears.
Enable Change brightness automatically when lighting changes , or similarly worded automatic-brightness control.
The option is available only on PCs with the necessary sensor and manufacturer support. It is generally not available for ordinary external monitors.
You can still use the manual brightness slider after enabling automatic adjustment. On HDR displays, changes may take longer because Windows is trying to match perceived brightness rather than simply applying an immediate fixed value.
6. Adjust brightness based on what is on screen
Content Adaptive Brightness Control, or CABC, changes brightness and contrast according to the content shown on a supported built-in display. A laptop may dim a mostly dark scene and brighten when a light page or window appears.
Go to Settings > System > Display .
Select Brightness .
Find Change brightness based on content .
Choose one of the available options:
Off: Disables content-based brightness and contrast changes.
Always: Enables the behavior on battery and while plugged in.
On Battery Only: Enables it only when the PC is running on battery.
CABC is not the same as ambient-light brightness. Ambient adjustment responds to the room; CABC responds to the picture or windows currently displayed. The CABC control is also optional, so many Windows 11 laptops will not show it. The manufacturer must enable support for the feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
Choose Off if brightness changes during videos, games, or document work are distracting. The adaptive options may help reduce battery use.
7. Let Energy saver dim the screen
Windows 11 can automatically lower screen brightness when Energy saver is active. This is a battery-saving behavior, not a separate brightness level that you set manually.
Open Settings > System > Power & battery .
Select Energy saver .
Turn on Lower screen brightness when using energy saver .
Configure when Energy saver should activate, if needed.
Energy saver also limits some background activity. If your screen suddenly becomes dimmer when the battery gets low, check this setting before assuming the display or driver has failed.
8. Apply an Energy recommendation
Windows 11’s Energy recommendations can apply display-related power settings for you. This is useful if you want a lower-brightness configuration without manually searching through every power option.
Open Settings > System > Power & battery .
Select Energy recommendations .
Find Set the screen brightness for best energy efficiency .
The recommendation changes display properties such as brightness. It is not currently enabled for external displays.
Depending on the PC, the same page may offer related recommendations, including Save power by screen contrast and brightness for the content shown and Change brightness automatically when lighting around me changes . The content-based recommendation is unavailable on devices without batteries, while ambient-light recommendations require suitable sensor support and do not apply to ordinary external monitors.
9. Adjust HDR and SDR content brightness
HDR introduces a separate brightness relationship between standard-dynamic-range and high-dynamic-range content. If HDR video or games look too dim, too bright, or noticeably different from the desktop, adjust the HDR content control rather than repeatedly moving the normal brightness slider.
Open Settings > System > Display .
Select the HDR-capable display if more than one screen is connected.
Adjust the relevant slider:
SDR content brightness: Used mainly with an external HDR monitor to change how SDR content appears relative to HDR.
HDR content brightness: Used on a built-in HDR display to change the appearance of HDR content relative to the separately controlled SDR brightness.
On a built-in HDR laptop display, both the ordinary Brightness control and HDR content brightness can affect how HDR material looks. Some apps do not react immediately; close and restart the affected app after changing the slider.

If an HDR monitor connected to a laptop reports that HDR is unsupported while the displays are duplicated, go to Settings > System > Display and change the display mode to Extend these displays .
On some HDR laptops, Windows turns HDR off while running on battery. In Settings > System > Display > HDR , expand the HDR options and clear Turn off HDR when my PC is running on battery or the similarly named HDR video-streaming option, if available.
What to do when the brightness slider is missing
First identify the type of display you are trying to control:
To update the display driver through Windows, right-click Start , open Device Manager , expand Display adapters , right-click the adapter, and select Update driver . If Windows finds no newer driver, check the computer manufacturer’s support page. Avoid assuming that a PowerShell, Command Prompt, WMI, or powercfg command will work on every system; brightness support depends on the display, driver, and firmware.

Brightness is not the same as Night light
Night light changes color temperature to make the display warmer and reduce blue-looking light. It does not directly set the panel’s brightness. Find it at Settings > System > Display > Night light , where you can adjust its Strength and schedule.
Night light may be unavailable with certain drivers, including DisplayLink or Microsoft Basic Display drivers. If you want a dimmer screen, use one of the brightness methods above; if you want warmer colors, use Night light.
Windows 10 note
These instructions include Windows 10’s older Action Center and Display paths, but Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025 . Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update security fixes, software updates, or technical assistance for Windows 10 after that date. The labels and power features described here may also differ depending on the Windows 10 release and the PC manufacturer.
Why is there no brightness slider in Windows?
Windows may omit the slider when you are using an external monitor. Adjust that monitor with its buttons or on-screen display. If the display is built in, update the driver under Device Manager > Display adapters and restart the PC.

Is there a universal Windows 11 shortcut for brightness?
No. Windows 11 does not document a universal brightness key combination. Laptop brightness keys are manufacturer-specific and may require Fn, Fn Lock, or a hot-key driver.
Why does my laptop brightness change by itself?
Ambient-light adjustment, Content Adaptive Brightness Control, and Energy saver can all change the display automatically. Check Settings > System > Display > Brightness and Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver.
Does Night light lower screen brightness?
Night light primarily changes color temperature and blue-light intensity. It is separate from the brightness setting, although the warmer image may appear less harsh.
Why does HDR look too dark after I change brightness?
HDR and SDR use separate relative-brightness controls. Open Settings > System > Display > HDR and adjust SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness, depending on the display. Restart an app if it does not respond immediately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
The Bottom Line
For a built-in display, start with Quick Settings or Settings > System > Display . Use the laptop’s sun-icon keys for quick changes, and enable automatic or power-saving options only if you want Windows to adjust brightness for you. For an external monitor, go straight to its physical controls or on-screen menu. If a built-in display’s slider is missing or ineffective, update the display adapter driver before looking for command-line workarounds.
