📌 Maritime Education Series — For Everyone ⚙️ Main Engine Cylinder Lubrication System In this video, we explore the main engine cylinder lubrication system — a vital component ensuring smooth and efficient engine operation. Cylinder lubrication plays a key role in: ✅ Reducing friction between piston rings and the liner ✅ Providing a proper gas seal ✅ Cleaning piston rings and grooves ✅ Neutralizing acidic combustion products to prevent corrosion and wear Each cylinder liner contains multiple lubricating orifices and non-return valves through which oil is injected. When entering Emission Control Areas (ECA), vessels switch to ultra-low sulfur fuel and low TBN cylinder oil. Outside ECAs, high TBN oil is used. Oil is transferred from the storage tank to the day tank, which holds one day’s supply. Float switches monitor oil levels, triggering alarms to maintain safety. From there, oil flows by gravity to the cylinder lubricator, where piston pumps feed each lubrication point. Flow sensors and alarms ensure immediate action if any issue arises. A sump and heating coil maintain the oil between 40–45 °C, while the camshaft-driven pumps ensure precise, timed injection as the piston moves upward — providing even distribution through liner grooves. This system is one of the most critical safeguards for reliable two-stroke main engine operation at sea. 🚢⚙️ Source:Erkan Ağdaş 💡 Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost! ✅ Reshare to grow your network! 📩 Follow us LLOYD'S MARITIME INSTITUTE for more maritime insights! #MarineEngineering #ETO #MainEngine #LubricationSystem #Ship #Maritime #HerkesİçinEğitim #EngineRoom #Shipping #TechnicalEducation #MarineTechnology #MarineMaintenance

Erkan A. 9mo Edited Report this post ⚙️ Main Engine Cylinder Lubrication System In this video, we describe the main engine cylinder lubrication system and its key components. Cylinder lubrication plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of the main engine. Its functions are to reduce friction between piston rings and the liner, provide proper sealing, keep piston rings and grooves clean, and neutralize the acidity of combustion products to prevent corrosion and wear. Each cylinder liner has several lubricating orifices and non-return valves through which the oil is injected. When the vessel enters emission control areas, the engine is changed over to ultra-low sulfur fuel and low TBN cylinder oil is used. Outside these zones, high TBN oil is consumed. Cylinder oil is transferred from the storage tank to the day tank, which supplies enough oil for one day’s consumption. Float switches in the tanks activate high- and low-level alarms, ensuring operational safety. The lubricating oil flows by gravity from the day tank to the cylinder lubricator. The pipeline is electrically trace heated to maintain the oil temperature at around 45 °C. The lubricator is equipped with piston pumps, each feeding one lubricating point. Flow sensors detect any loss of flow and trigger alarms, slowing down the main engine to prevent damage. At the bottom of the lubricator, a sump maintains a constant oil level through a float valve. A heating coil keeps the oil temperature between 40 and 45 °C. The piston pumps are driven by a camshaft that is mechanically linked to the engine. A hand wheel is also provided to allow manual lubrication when the engine is stopped. The timing of the oil injection is synchronized with the upward movement of the piston. As the top piston ring uncovers the lubricating orifices, the oil is injected and distributed evenly along the liner through circumferential zigzag grooves. This ensures proper lubrication of the liner surface, minimizes wear, and supports efficient engine performance. This system is one of the most critical elements for the safe and reliable operation of two-stroke main engines at sea. #MarineEngineering #ETO #MainEngine #LubricationSystem #Ship #Maritime #HerkesİçinEğitim #EngineRoom #Shipping #TechnicalEducation #MarineTechnology #MarineMaintenance …more 46 3 Comments Like Comment Share Copy LinkedIn Facebook X To view or add a comment, sign in

Why it happens: 🔸 Pump started too fast, causing surge effect 🔸 Air trapped in the lines or mud pits 🔸 Wrong pump speed sequencing 🔸 Inadequate monitoring during the first few strokes These spikes can lead to false readings, misinterpreted as formation changes or lost returns. And if the crew misses the real trend behind it control might be lost before it even starts.
